INTERNET ABUSE
& HOW TO HANDLE IT

If email is getting to take up a lot of your time, because of the amount of email you have to filter through, you might need to use a program specifically dedicated to email instead of using the email feature in your web browser. There are email programs which include sophisticated mail filtering options to get rid of the spam, the unwelcome advertisements, and unsolicited political or commercial email so you can read just what you want. Some even allow you to reject email from specific individuals or websites or domains. Check our online software sources page for a good picture of email programs available today.

INTERNET ABUSE
& HOW TO HANDLE IT

One common subject of questions is Net Abuse. By clicking on that topic here, you should jump to a FAQ document dealing with net abuse. That document contains useful info about spamming and mechanisms to prevent it. If you're not clear what spam is, click above and find out! Also, consult the SPAM FAQ. Then, when you feel you understand what spam is, visit the newsgroup news.admin.net-abuse.misc for details on the difference between spam and velveeta, and information on techniques for defeating or at least minimizing both. Also check out The Net Services Home Page for discussion of spam, and to download the freeware SpamHater program - that program streamlines the process of tracking down spammers' true identities and notifying providers who can terminate their service! (I use it!)

Netiquette, Spam & Emailing Conventions

Spamming is never acceptable, no matter how you look at it. Spamming is when you send unsolicited e-mail to a large quantity of users on the internet or when you post the same message to many different Usenet newsgroups. Don't do it.

The term FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions and that's where people can find answers to very common questions. A FAQ also helps keep down the number of duplicate posts in a newsgroup. Always see if there is a FAQ listed in a newsgroup before you post.

Usenet newsgroups are designed to share ideas, make friends, discuss opinions, and generally discuss matters related to the topic of the newsgroup. The Usenet is NOT for trolling which is when people pull e-mail addressess off the newsgroups so they can perform unsolicited mailings.

If you receive an unsolicited e-mail message in your mailbox (and if you do not appreciate it), you should send a message to three places. First, contact your service provider by e-mail or phone and make a record of it. Explain to them all the details and forward a copy of the offending message to them. Second, send a carbon copy to the postmaster of the site where the message came from (if you can figure it out). Third, send a carbon copy to the sender of the message. Most importantly - make a record of your conversation, date/time/etc so if you receive another message, you have facts to back up a more serious complaint.

If you really must pitch some kind of hype about a legal get-rich-quick scheme, you should not post it into the Usenet as you are almost guaranteed to catch a great deal of flack for the post. If you feel your -system- is valid then spend the money and place a display ad in a major internet-related magazine as well as set-up a website and enter your site into the search engines. This would be the safest and most professional way to pitch your scheme. Whatever you do, don't send out unsolicited e-mail about your scheme.

If you must hide your name and e-mail address from your posting, use a valid *anonymous remailing service*. Be advised that your name/address will be cloaked from the post but if the message you posted contained illegal material, the authorities can easily find you as most remailing services keep track of who sent the original message. Forging your name/address will only land you in trouble as forgery may be a crime in your locality. Also, never log-in with your friend's ID and password. If you post something offensive then your friend will be the one who gets in trouble. Play it safe, if you must be anonymous, use a valid and legal anonymous mail service.

Advertising on the Internet is a delicate matter. First, you do not want to post a HEY - CHECK OUT MY BUSINESS kind of message in a newsgroup. The proper method is to #1, set up a website, #2, place your URL in all of the available search engines, #3, advertise in the print media of your new website, #4, buy ad space in some of the search engines, and #5 set-up an infoserver on ReplyNet to distribute a text copy of your brochure or other material via e-mail on-demand. NEVER send out unsolicited junk mail pitching your new product or business - your image will be ruined by all the hate mail you will receive.

When you respond to a message in a newsgroup it is a general rule to copy only the lines of text that you are responding to. In addition, you want to make sure your return address is listed so others may write to you. Any extra text only causes confusion and should be avoided. In addition, typing in all UPPPER CASE makes it look like you are shouting and including the entire previous message in your post is not needed.
